Fingerless Gloves Design Inspiration

One early April morning I was taking my daughter on a walk through our neighborhood in her stroller. It was a slightly brisk morning with a light wind. I was wearing a medium-weight jacket and a lightweight hat and while my body and head felt warm… my hands did not. In order to push the stroller, I needed to keep my hands out of my pockets, and without gloves on they got pretty chilly.

That’s when I had the idea for fingerless gloves! I wanted to design something that would keep my hands warm while also allowing me to grip the stroller handle with my fingers. Fingerless mittens were the perfect solution.

Yarn Used

I chose to use this beautiful pink and coral hand-dyed yarn with speckles by Dark Wave Fibers to make my mittens fun and whimsical. Just how I like them! This yarn is listed as super bulky but it’s really more of a heavy bulky weight in my opinion. It makes the mittens warm but not bulky.

Other Suggested Yarns

Many of my test knitters used Lion Brand Yarn’s Color Made Easy for their mittens. This is a 100% acrylic yarn and great for those with wool sensitivities.

I would also HIGHLY recommend Lion Brand Yarn’s New Hue + Me designed by Alex from Two of Wands. This yarn is an acrylic wool blend with similar fiber content to Lion Brand Yarn’s Super Bulky version Wool-Ease Thick and Quick. Which I use in my free Glimmer Beanie Baby Hat, Chunky Bobble Pillow, and Char Char Hat patterns here on the blog.

If you’ve viewed my other patterns you know how much I love Knit Picks! For these mittens, I would recommend their Biggo yarn. It’s 50% superwash and 50% nylon so it would make these mittens very durable and soft.

Fingerless Mittens Construction

These gloves are actually very beginner-friendly. I highly recommend them to first-time mitten and glove knitters. Each one is knit in the round starting at the bottom cuff up to the base of the thumb hole. Stitches are then put onto waste yarn to be knit later for the thumb. Then the rest of the hand is knit up to the top where the fingers come out. Finally, the thumb stitches are put back on the needles and the thumb is knit in the round.

The length of the mittens is fully customizable to fit the length of your fingers and how much of your hand you want them to cover. They also come in multiple sizes from baby, child, adult S/M, and adult M/L so you can get the perfect fit for anyone in the family.

Notes:

The baby size of this pattern features no thumb and a closed top due to the size and shape of baby hands. All sizes start with a twisted ribbing cuff and then move to the accented twisted rib pattern for the lower hand. Once the lower hand is completed the baby size begins a decrease to close up the mitten and the rest of the sizes move onto the thumb gusset. In order to keep stitch counts and stitches in the same place, a 0 is put in place of the baby size during the thumb gusset and top cuff.

The only difference in the pattern between the left and right hand is the set-up row in the lower hand section. Therefore, you will only need to follow the different set of instructions for the lower hand portion of each hand.

The length of the mitten can be adjusted during the bottom cuff and top cuff section based on your desired length and size of your hand.

The Twisted German Cast On is a nice stretchy cast-on that works great for mitten cuffs. For a video tutorial on how to do this cast on visit my YouTube video: Twisted German Cast On.

finishing

Weave in the ends and block. To block your mittens, simply soak them in lukewarm water with your favorite wool wash for 15 minutes. Then squeeze out the excess moisture with a towel and lay flat to dry.

For the baby mittens I like to connect them using a long piece of yarn attached to each cuff that can be threaded through a coat so that if the mittens fall off, they won’t get lost.

Now it’s time to keep your hands toasty warm with your new fingerless gloves!
