Here’s my favorite process for linen closet organization using what I learned from The Home Edit.

After watching Get Organized with The Home Edit on Netflix I wanted to dive head first into organizing every space in my home. We live in a small home with 7 people (me, my husband, and 5 kids) so clutter and stuff can start to pile up pretty quickly.
I decided it was time to organize the spaces that were causing me unwanted anxiety once and for all. (I am happy to report that 4 years later these spaces still look this way! The system works!)
In order to really go all in I ordered this book, grabbed my measuring tape and a notebook and got to planning. I walked around my house looking at which spaces were the problem and decided that I would tackle my linen closet, craft closet, drop zone/office/catch all space, and mudroom.

How to Get Started on your Linen Closet Organization
Of all those spaces I wanted to organize, the linen closet seamed like the easiest place to start. I first drew up a sketch of the space. Then I measured all of the shelves to see what may fit. Next I went to The Container Store website to plan out what storage options I would need. The closest Container Store is an hour away so for this project I ordered everything online.
Here is what I learned from The Home Edit about Linen Closet Organization
1. Declutter First
Before organizing, take everything out of your linen closet. Sort items into three categories: keep, donate, and discard. Be honest about what you need—that fraying towel from college might not make the cut.
I had the most random stuff hanging out in this space. I had turned into a dump zone for anything on the second floor that I didn’t really know what to do with. Like a photo wall hanging from our wedding that no longer fit my decor.
Tips:
- Check for duplicates. Do you really need six sets of queen-size sheets? I like to keep things minimal when it comes to bedding.
- Discard anything stained, torn, or beyond repair.
2. Clean the Closet
Once empty, wipe down shelves and vacuum the floor.
3. Sort and Categorize
Group similar items together:
- Sheets: By size (twin, queen, king).
- Towels: Separate bath towels, hand towels, and washcloths.
- Seasonal Items: Store extra blankets or holiday linens in labeled bins.
Pro Tip: Store sheet sets together by tucking the folded sheets and pillowcases into one of the matching pillowcases. This keeps everything neat and easy to grab.
4. Maximize Space – AKA Buy all the CONTAINERS
Optimize your linen closet organization with space-saving solutions:
- Baskets and Bins: Use labeled containers to keep small items like washcloths or toiletries organized.
- Shelf Dividers: Prevent stacks from toppling over by creating clear boundaries.
- Folding: I like to use the KonMari method of folding in order to keep everything organized.

5. Label Everything
Labels are key to maintaining your hard-earned organization. Use clear labels or a label maker for bins, baskets, and shelves. I know where everything goes but my family doesn’t so this ensures they can also keep it organized.
6. Maintain the System
Consistency is essential. Return items to their designated spots and periodically reassess your closet to ensure it’s meeting your needs.
Bonus Tip: Adopt a one-in, one-out rule. When you buy new towels or sheets, donate or discard an old set. I only keep 2 sets of bedding items so that it’s easier to manage.

- Add a sachet or cedar blocks to keep linens smelling fresh.
- Use matching storage bins for a polished, cohesive look.
- Consider painting the inside of your closet a light, cheerful color to brighten the space.
