Why setting goals for your life is important.
I’ve always loved goal setting and attribute what I’ve accomplished to the goals I have set in the past. This past summer my husband and I were finally cleaning out our disaster of a basement and I stumbled across some bins that were brought here from our previous apartment, stuck in a corner, and never opened again. Six years later and I was curious to know the contents.
Amongst the high school year books, scrapbooks from our wedding, and newspaper articles were a few goal setting workbooks that I had filled out back in 2009. At that time, I was 26 and working as the Director of Sales for a hotel.
In this goal setting book I had written down my 5 year dream goals and it was so interesting to see now 15 years later what I had actually accomplished and what was no longer a goal. One big goal was to become the Vice President of Sales for multiple hotels and manage a team of Sales Managers. Check, I reached that goal years back and now have moved onto running an entire management company. Something I never had on my vision board that’s for sure! Oh and 5 kids wasn’t on there either!
One goal I still haven’t achieved is the ability to do a pull up without assistance. I’ve since removed that goal from my list! This got me thinking about how what we focus on we achieve. The number of times I’ve practiced doing a pull-up since writing down that goal can be counted on less than two hands so of course how could I expect to reach that goal.
How to set goals differently now as a busy mom.
As a busy mom my view on goal setting has changed slightly for 2025. My word for this year is FOCUS. In the past, I would round up all of the areas of my life that I wanted to grow in and create a vision board around ALL of those things. Then I would add them into my busy life and immediately feel overwhelmed.
In the book Atomic Habits, James Clear writes “you do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.” This made me realize that I was setting my goals all wrong. Instead of creating a bunch of huge goals for each area of your life, FOCUS on ONE main goal and then set-up systems for the rest.
What we focus on we achieve – How a vision board can help manifest your dreams.
What we focus on, we achieve. This principle lies at the heart of manifestation. By regularly visualizing your goals through a vision board, you train your mind to recognize opportunities and align your actions with your dreams. Manifestation works because it shifts your mindset from doubt to belief, helping you stay motivated and proactive. As a busy mom, tapping into this power can transform the way you approach challenges and aspirations, turning your vision board into a tool for real, tangible change.
Why Vision Boards Are Perfect for Moms in 2025
- Clarity Amidst Chaos: A vision board organizes your dreams and goals into a visual format, offering clarity amidst the daily whirlwind.
- Encouragement: Seeing your goals laid out visually can motivate you to stay on track.
- Mindfulness: Taking time to create a vision board can be a moment of self-care and reflection.
- Digital Convenience: With Canva, you can create a vision board on your phone or laptop, anytime and anywhere.
First Step – Decide on your ONE Main Goal
The first step to goal setting and manifesting for busy moms is to narrow down all of your goals and dreams to just one. If you are reading this, you are most likely an overachiever like me so trying to come up with just one dream may sound difficult. That’s why I’ve created a 30 day journal process to help you figure out what your MOST IMPORTANT goal to start with for 2025 will be.
Don’t worry, you won’t only focus on one goal for the rest of your life. After deciding on your main goal you will then set up easy systems and habits to keep the other areas of your life afloat. Then, after you succeed in reaching your goal you can put it on auto pilot and move onto the next goal.
Here is an example.
If I decided that my main goal for 2025 was to help more busy moms with my blog then my daily focus, vision board, and goal would be on reaching let’s say 100,000 page views per month on my blog by June. The rest of my goals I would set up small daily habits around them just to keep them moving along but I would put all of my major focus into working on my blog every day. Then, once June hits and I reach my 100,000 page views per month (because if I focus on it I will achieve it) I will check off that goal, create a system to keep it going, and move onto my next focus which might be fitness.
One important step is to think about what it would feel like to reach your goal. How would your life change if you accomplished it. That is the key. The feeling.

Step Two – Create a Vision Board with just your main focus
Step 1: Reflect on Your Journal Writing
Take a few moments to look at your journal for the last 30 days and think about your goals for the year ahead. Ask yourself:
- What is one main theme that keeps coming up?
- What do I want to do more of?
- What do I want to do less of?
- If I were to focus on one thing to start what would that be?
- What would my life look like if I achieved that goal?
Write these goals down to ensure your vision board aligns with your priorities.
Step 2: Gather Inspiration
Search for images, quotes, and affirmations that resonate with your one goal. Canva offers a wide library of photos, graphics, and templates to get you started. Some ideas include:
- Pictures showing what life will be like once you reach your goal.
- Motivational quotes around your goal like “Progress over perfection,” “Consistency is the key to change.”
- Icons representing health, vacations, or career milestones.
Step 3: Choose a Template on Canva
Log into Canva and search for “vision board templates.” Select a layout that appeals to you. Many templates are pre-designed, so all you need to do is drag and drop your images and text. For a step by step process see the related post below.
Pro Tip: Pick a design that can double as your phone or desktop wallpaper for constant inspiration.
Step 5: Save and Share
Once your vision board is complete, save it as a digital file. Print it if you’d like a physical copy or share it with loved ones to keep yourself accountable.
Tips to Stick to Your Vision
- Make It Visible: Set your vision board as your phone’s wallpaper or place the printed version on your fridge or desk.
- Review Regularly: Spend a few minutes each week revisiting your board to track progress and stay motivated.
- Adjust When Needed: Life changes quickly, especially for moms. Update your board to reflect evolving goals.
